Ruiyi Li 李睿一

Sociologist

Welcome to my personal site! Hi, I’m Ruiyi. I’m a Ph.D. Candidate in the Sociology department at the University of Southern California. I earned my Bachelor degree in Public Administration at Henan Normal University, China. After spending two years in Boston, I earned my M.A. degree in Global Studies from Brandeis University. Back then, I’ve worked on how Chinese nonprofits navigate resource scarcities and political uncertainties by choosing different organizational forms.

Now I am living in Los Angeles, California. Currently, I am working on my dissertation project, which explores how upper-and-middle-class Chinese parents make decisions on studying abroad at the undergraduate level and prepare for it accordingly. Using in-depth interview and participant observation, this project aims to unpack the social process of how elites from emerging economies, such as China, manage to navigate various educational systems beyond the national border.

欢迎来到我的个人网站！我是李睿一，南加州大学社会学系博士候选人。我的研究兴趣主要是社会分层，组织社会学，文化社会学和海外教育在中国。

从2023年春季到2024年春季，我将在中国为我的博士论文展开田野调查。我的博士课题着眼于在教育全球化的时代，中国新兴的中产和中上产阶级家长如何在教育商业中介的帮助下进行出国留学的决策和准备过程。我关注三个面向，一为家长对子女成就的期待，教养观念以及中西方的教育系统比较，二是子女对于海外高等教育的憧憬与想象以及对中西方教育的理解。最后，我希望了解商业留学咨询在这一过程中扮演的角色。
